Australian cyclist barred from individual pursuit over shoulder tape at Commonwealth Games 2026
Glasgow: Australia’s cycling team is unhappy but unable to appeal a decision by race officials to disqualify a rider from a bronze medal race over the taping of her shoulders, even though she had them taped when she won gold a day earlier.
Felicity Wilson-Haffenden, who was part of the women’s team that won gold in the team pursuit, was disqualified on Friday from the women’s 4000m individual pursuit for wearing strapping tape under her race suit.
The 21-year-old cyclist finished fourth fastest in individual qualifying to book herself a spot in the bronze medal race against Scotland’s Erin Boothman, before officials from world cycling’s governing body, the UCI, disqualified her for a breach of equipment and uniform rules.
Those officials deemed that the tape, on Wilson-Haffenden’s shoulders, caused a “morphological change” – a change to the physical shape, outer appearance or internal structure of the body – which is against racing rules.
The official rule says, “clothing and other items or accessories worn by a rider may not modify the morphology of the rider”.
It is unclear how and why officials picked up on the taping on Friday and not Thursday, and whether the check of the two Australian athletes was random. The UCI has been contacted for comment and clarification.
The same officials ruled that another Australian, Sophie Edwards, would also be disqualified for having “excessive” padding in her helmet.
Both Wilson-Haffenden and Edwards had the same taping and helmet, respectively, when they raced the previous day. No clothing or equipment issues were raised after officials completed inspections on Thursday.
Executive general manager of performance at Aus Cycling, Jesse Korf, said the Australian team was frustrated by the decision to disqualify Wilson-Haffenden.
He described the decision as subjective and said Wilson-Haffenden received taping to her shoulders after having discomfort and mobility issues.
“On inspection after the race, the UCI [Union Cycliste Internationale] concluded that the taping of the shoulder constituted, according to them in the rule book, a morphological change, but they weren’t able to articulate what that exactly was because it’s a grey area. You cannot measure what a morphological change is,” Korf said.
“They made that conclusion, we looked into it and, being that it’s non-measurable and subjective, unfortunately that conclusion is final, which we’re most certainly not happy with and Felicity is upset, of course.”
Korf said the team was also disappointed in the decision to disqualify Edwards, but she had not qualified for a medal race.
The Australian team does not believe there is a risk that the team’s gold medal will be stripped or under review, given both riders passed inspections on the day.
“We heard nothing after inspections yesterday,” Korf said. “After races, riders get inspected, there’s always checks, and there was no challenge, no nothing yesterday, so that’s in the clear.
“The challenges [today] are from what was faced in the individual pursuits and the conclusions of the commissaires.”
Korf said Australia would seek more clarification on the rules moving forward.
“Well, we’ll definitely try to learn more around how the assessment is done so that we can learn and mitigate,” Korf said.
New Zealand’s Bryony Boothman has now been promoted to the bronze medal race.
Glasgow 2026 has also been contacted for comment.
Before her disqualification, Wilson-Haffenden had said she was looking forward to the bronze medal race despite appearing quite distressed and unwell after qualifying.
She needed extra recovery time, was shaky, and needed assistance when leaving the track.
“No doubt I’ll be riding tonight. I mean, a 4000m effort takes a lot out of you, and I needed a little longer to recover, but I’ll be all good,” she said.
It was only her second individual 4000m pursuit, and said her post-race condition was a result of giving it her all.
“I enjoy suffering, so I quite enjoy this race,” she said.
“Of course, it’s not a nice experience at the finish, but yeah, I hope tonight will be nicer.”
